Our System

As a member of the SABIS® School Network, we believe that an intelligent approach produces better results. Our excellent results are achieved by:

  • Planning and preparing
  • Teaching methodically and comprehensively, using teaching SABIS® methods
  • Conducting frequent and regular testing
  • Continuous and appropriate follow-up
  • Encouraging active student participation in the education process

Everything possible is done to ensure success and no one who studies in a school in the SABIS® School Network is allowed to ‘fail in peace

Planning and Preparing

The whole class is taught together , using the SABIS® Point SystemTM . Each objective (called a ‘point’) of the lesson is taught interactively, and incorporating, as appropriate, oral work, individual written work and group checking. Class time is utilised in building a solid foundation of knowledge through interacting, analysing, forming and expressing opinions, and through effective discussion.
  • It is complete : it includes all the ‘points’ to be taught and the skills to be developed
  • It is detailed: each objective is precise and measurable
  • It is paced: progress is charted against a time-line
  • It dovetails with that of the following stage , ensuring that nothing essential to further learning is omitted, thereby enabling the transitions from year to year to be smooth and successful.

Teaching Methods

The whole class is taught together, using the SABIS® Point SystemTM . Each objective (called a ‘point’) of the lesson is taught interactively, and incorporating, as appropriate, oral work, individual written work and group checking. Class time is utilised in building a solid foundation of knowledge through interacting, analysing, forming and expressing opinions, and through effective discussion.

The varied teaching methods used and the pace set, stimulate students, keeping them interested and harnessing their enthusiasm. We believe very strongly in interactive teaching rather than just passive listening or the taking of dictated notes.

Testing and Monitoring

Continuous evaluation is an integral part of the educational process in the SABIS® School Network. Our rigorous testing program allows us to evaluate student learning, and permit timely, positive intervention should the need arise. This frequent testing also has other major advantages for our students:

  • Students are prepared to perform well under the pressure of time constraints . They develop the ability to organise their time well, and to control and use stress productively;
  • Students develop the ability to focusand to sustain concentration for increasingly longer periods;

Proprietary SABIS® Software allows reliable and prompt assessment of student performance and supplies a wide range of comprehensive reports which allow effective follow-up.

SABIS® Academic Monitoring SystemTM

The SABIS® AMSTM allows the quick and accurate pinpointing of ‘gaps’ in student knowledge , as they form. These weekly multiple-choice tests in the core subjects from grade 3 upwards test the material taught the previous week. The results of these tests allow us to monitor not only individual student progress, but also teacher effectiveness and the progress of the class as a whole.

Working as a team, teachers and students then focus their efforts on ‘filling the gaps’. When ‘gaps’ in knowledge are identified and eliminated, a ‘gap-free’, cohesive structure is built in students’ minds, allowing further, secure learning to take place.

Follow-up

Through regular testing, the progress of each student is carefully monitored, and any necessary follow-up is undertaken on a timely basis. In addition to praise and encouragement, all available means are used to help those students who may fall behind for one reason or another. Students are advised in study techniques, motivated by the academic staff and encouraged by peer-tutors. In the SABIS® School Network, no one is left to his or her own devices.

Homework

Homework is an essential part of every student’s education. Homework allows students to review and give extra reinforcement to the concepts they have learned that day in class.
Homework is not assigned until Term 3 of Level F (Grade 4) Younger students are, however, encouraged to read at home every evening.

Private Tuition

It is one of our prime goals that all teaching and learning take place in class . Parents are strongly advised not to employ a
private tutor as such an action could be counter-productive and undermine the methods of the school. If it is felt that extra help
is needed, then parents are requested to first of all discuss the issue with their AQC (Academic Quality Controller).

Preparing Students for an IT Future

SABIS® prepares students for the future by teaching them to utilize to the maximum extent, state-of-the-art technology.Students in the SABIS® School Network

  • Attend computer courses which concentrate on developing essential IT skills
  • May access the Internet for research or study purposes: some online courses are offered giving
  • SABIS® students’ anywhere in the world the opportunity to review material and to study the courses offered
  • Benefit from computer exposure in computer clubs and the computerised Accelerated Reader Program

Discipline

SABIS® is a caring community that strongly believes in the principles of respect, responsibility and accountability. The goal of our disciplinary code is to develop our students into future world citizens who will be responsible members of society, respecting both themselves and others. Those who contravene our disciplinary code are held accountable, and we expect them, without exception, to accept the consequences of their actions and be responsible for improving their behaviour.

Our disciplinary code is strict, but it is reasonable and fair. Detention is the most commonly used form of disciplinary action, and is always used in a positive, logical and consistent manner. Students may be detained during school hours, after school or during weekends and for increasingly longer periods. Corporal punishment is never used. Parents are also made aware of serious disciplinary issues and, as necessary, requested to contribute to the solution.

Attendance & Punctuality

Attendance and punctuality are essential to the SABIS® educational philosophy and standards. Our methodical, staged
educational process requires full, and prompt, attendance if the full benefit of our education is to be realised. Every minute of every lesson, every lesson of every day and every day of the year contributes directly to sound learning.

Neither absence nor lateness is condoned. Students may not begin a holiday early or return to school late after a holiday. It is
the responsibility of students to make up the work missed due to absence and, other than in cases of emergency, medical and dental appointments must be made outside of school hours. Students who have been absent or who are late for school must
report to the Head Disciplinarian; they are not accepted into class without a valid excuse. The school determines whether or not
a reason is valid and strict records are kept of attendance and punctuality.
